If you've looked at an auto policy in North Carolina lately, you've seen the numbers 50/100/50. Since July 2025, those are the state's minimum liability limits — but what do they actually mean?
50 = $50,000 per person for bodily injury you cause to someone else.
100 = $100,000 total per accident for bodily injury.
50 = $50,000 per accident for property damage you cause.
Here's what most people miss: minimums are a legal floor, not a recommendation. If you cause a serious accident, $50,000 per person runs out fast — medical bills alone can blow past it. Anything above your limits comes out of your pocket.
That's why we walk every customer through this. Sometimes the state minimum is fine. Often, bumping up your limits costs less per month than you'd think — and an umbrella policy on top is one of the cheapest ways to protect everything you've built.
